Initially, the new airport was planned within Pune City but faced objections from residents, leading to a shift in location to Purandar tehsil in 2015. However, due to opposition from some farmers owning the land, a revised proposal was presented to the Centre, and the final decision on the new airport is yet to be confirmed. Meanwhile, the current airport's expansion is being pursued.
